North One productions in both the London and Birmingham offices have been recording their carbon footprint through the ‘albert’ scheme.
albert is a collaborative BAFTA, indie and broadcaster backed project that provides the film and TV industries with the necessary expertise and opportunities to take action on environmental sustainability.
In Birmingham we have achieved certifications for Guy Martin Vs The Robot Car, Guy Martin’s World War 1 Tank, The Gadget Show, Travel Man and we are on our way to getting more on upcoming productions.
To achieve these certifications, we have had to prove that we are doing all we can as a production to reduce our carbon footprint. That has meant getting our crew to recycle in the office and on location, hiring eco cars, using low energy equipment and including editorial content into productions that makes the viewer aware of sustainability and environmental issues….to name but a few. We also check to see if our suppliers have environmental policies too!
At the beginning of each production we send out a ‘Green Memo’ to crew, staff and contributors to make them aware of what we hope to achieve and then throughout the production we do all we can to reduce our predicted footprint.
This has been an eye-opening experience and so far on the Birmingham based productions we have reduced our footprint by 11 tonnes of CO2 per hour.
